Can anybody tell me what bird would that be (or narrow it down for me)?

It’s pretty small, maybe 5 or 6 inches from beak to tail.
It’s round and cute but not very colorful.
The eyes are black.
The beak and legs are light pink.
The whole top of his body is grey and the bottom (the belly and under the tail) is white.
There is a lot in my backyard, eating my seeds…in South Carolina.
(Wikipedia is a good site for birds but they have hundreds of them…)
Thank you Suzi for the links.
Thank you Tammy…your son was right, those birds are dark-eyes juncos.
My son tells me it is a Dark eyed junko . he worked for the Audubon society in SC for two years. and he has seen them
It sounds like some type of sparrow, nuthatch, thrush, warbler or possibly even a dove.
WhatBird is a great site. Has a search feature where you can determine the bird by a variety of choices, from location, appearance, type of food, even the songs. Just click on the search tab:

In addition, here is a list of common birds in South Carolina…look through the list to see if it’s there:
http://www.whatbird.com/browse/objs/All/birds_na_147/38/Location/5833/South%20Carolina/default.aspx
Many of the birds on the list have pink beaks and feet…that’s probably one of your best clues.
Good luck to you!
